THE CHI-SQUARE TEST Probability, Random Chance, and Genetics

چکیده
Probability, Random Chance, and Genetics Why do we study random chance and probability during a unit on genetics? Genetics is the study of inheritance, but it is also a study of probability. Most eukaryotic organisms are diploid, meaning that each cell contains two copies of every chromosome, so there are two copies of each gene that controls a trait (alleles). In sexual reproduction, these two copies of each chromosome separate, and are randomly sorted into the reproductive cells (gametes). When gametes from two different parents combine in fertilization, new combinations of alleles are created. Thus chance plays a major role in determining which alleles, and therefore which combinations of traits end up in each new individual. The important point is that the inheritance of characteristics is the result of random chance. Therefore, it is important to understand the nature of chance and probability and the resulting implications for the science of genetics. In short, the genes that an individual organism inherits depends on the “luck of the draw,” and the luck of the draw is dependent on the laws of probability.

Chi-Square Tests for Comparison Weighted Histograms
Weighted histograms in Monte-Carlo simulations are often used for the estimation of probability density functions. They are obtained as a result of random experiment with random events that have weights. In this paper the bin contents of a weighted histogram are considered as a sum of random variables with a random number of terms. Generalizations of the classical chi-square test for comparing ...
متن کاملOn the "NPD ratio" as a test for crossover interference.
The "NPD ratio," widely used by yeast geneticists, is of limited applicability and is prone to falsely indicate significant crossover interference in a chi-square test. A simple, better chi-square test for interference in two-factor crosses is described.
متن کاملA Study in a Steel Organisation on Employees Absenteeism
This study aims to identify factors that result in employees’ absenteeism in an organization, which may help the company manager to develope and identify attitudes of employees for minimising absenteeism. Data was collected from 100 steel manufacturing firm organizations adopting random or chance sampling method. The data was subjected to simple percentage analysis, for demographic variables an...
متن کاملOn the multi _ chi-square tests and their data complexity
Chi-square tests are generally used for distinguishing purposes; however when they are combined to simultaneously test several independent variables, extra notation is required. In this study, the chi-square statistics in some previous works is revealed to be computed half of its real value. Therefore, the notion of Multi _ Chi-square tests is formulated to avoid possible future confusions. In ...
